A new country can mean a new credit file

An overseas credit history is not normally transferred automatically into a standard UK credit report. A lender may have its own process for considering overseas information, so check with it directly.

Having little UK credit information does not mean you have done something wrong. It means lenders may have fewer records to assess.

Establish consistent information

  • Use a consistent legal name and UK address on financial accounts.
  • Keep evidence of addresses and update providers when you move.
  • Check free reports for errors once accounts have had time to be reported.
  • Apply only for services you need and can afford; avoid repeated speculative applications.

Check electoral registration eligibility

Eligibility depends on nationality and where in the UK you live. Do not assume that only British citizens can register, or that every newcomer is eligible.

If you cannot register, ask the credit reference agency how it can record an explanatory note. Ineligibility is not something you should try to bypass.
