A thin file is not the same as a bad history
If you have not used much credit, lenders may have less information to assess. There is no need to take out debt just to chase a score.
Start by checking the information already on your reports, including your name, addresses and any accounts that are reported.
Build the basics first
- Register to vote at your current address if you are eligible.
- Keep names and addresses consistent across your accounts.
- Pay credit commitments on time; reminders or a Direct Debit can help.
- Only apply for credit you need and can afford.
- Use eligibility checks that explicitly say they use a soft search before a full application.
If you choose to use a credit card
Understand the fees and interest before applying. A card marketed for credit building is still borrowing, and its interest rate may be high.
Spending a manageable amount and paying the statement balance in full by the due date can help avoid purchase interest, subject to the card’s terms. You do not need to carry an interest-bearing balance to build a payment history.
